A live, interactive session for anyone traveling to — or doing business with — Japan and East Asia. Learn what "reading the air" (空気を読む) actually means, and walk away with practical cultural intelligence you can use immediately.
In Japanese, kuuki wo yomu (空気を読む) means to read the unspoken atmosphere of a room — to understand what is being communicated beneath the surface of words. It is one of the most important social skills in Japanese culture, and one of the most invisible to outsiders.
This session doesn't teach etiquette tips. It teaches you to see the cultural operating system that makes those tips necessary — so you can navigate situations the tips don't cover.
Each session is live, small-group (max 8 participants), and led by a GARP-certified facilitator with deep experience bridging Japanese and international professional contexts.
Understand how cultural common sense forms — and why it feels like obvious truth to insiders and confusion to outsiders.
Learn what is being said when nothing is said — silence, indirect refusal, hierarchy in email, and the social weight of timing.
Why Japanese professional culture prioritizes relationship establishment — and how to build trust before making requests.
Work through live cross-cultural scenarios drawn from travel, business meetings, dining, and daily social interaction.
Leave with a personal framework for diagnosing cultural friction — applicable beyond Japan to any cross-cultural context.
Bring your own situations. The final portion of every session is dedicated to questions from your specific context.
