Experiences built for genuine understanding

Every GARP Discovery experience is grounded in the conviction that understanding a culture is a skill you can build — not a list of facts you memorize before a trip.

Japan Discovery Program

60–90 min · In-hotel sessions
For foreign guests staying in Japan
Enquire

Japan rewards those who look beneath the surface. For foreign guests who want more than sightseeing — who want to genuinely understand what they are experiencing — the Japan Discovery Program offers a live, facilitated cultural session delivered directly at their hotel.

Each session goes beyond tips and etiquette to give guests a framework for reading Japanese social and cultural life: what is happening in the spaces between words, why certain interactions feel the way they do, and how to engage with Japan in a way that is more meaningful, more respectful, and more memorable.

What the Session Covers

  • Reading the Room — What 空気を読む (kuuki wo yomu) means and how it shapes every social interaction in Japan
  • The Invisible Architecture — Hierarchy, group harmony, and the logic behind Japanese social behaviour
  • Beyond the Tourist Script — How to engage with local people, places, and situations in a way that goes deeper
  • What Japan Is Actually Communicating — Silence, indirection, ritual, and the meaning carried in gesture and form
  • Your Japan, More Clearly — A personal framework for interpreting what you encounter for the rest of your stay

Session Formats

  • Individual or couple session — 60 minutes, conversational and personalised
  • Small group session — up to 8 guests, 90 minutes with open Q&A
  • Pre-departure session — for guests leaving Japan who want to process what they experienced
  • Multi-day programme — for guests on extended stays or retreat groups

Who This Is For

  • First-time visitors to Japan seeking a deeper experience
  • Business travellers with Japanese counterparts or clients
  • Repeat visitors who want to move beyond the familiar surface
  • Cultural travellers, writers, educators, and anyone with serious curiosity about Japan

Custom Tours

Half-day · Full-day · Multi-day
For guests who want to go further than a session
Enquire

For guests who complete a Japan Discovery session and want to put the framework into practice, Custom Tours extend the same cultural lens into a live, guided experience. Rather than a standard sightseeing itinerary, each tour is built around helping you read and engage with what you're actually encountering — neighborhoods, shrines, markets, conversations — through the cultural framework introduced in your session.

Tours are led by GARP-trained guides and built around your interests, schedule, and the depth of engagement you're looking for — from a half-day neighborhood walk to a multi-day custom itinerary.

Tour Formats

  • Half-Day Immersion — A focused 3–4 hour walking experience in one neighborhood or theme, applying the cultural framework in real time
  • Full-Day Custom Itinerary — A complete day built around your specific interests — history, food culture, craftsmanship, spirituality, or daily life
  • Multi-Day Private Tour — An extended, fully personalized itinerary for individuals, couples, or small groups across multiple cities
  • Business + Culture — For business travelers combining meetings with guided cultural context on the side

What Makes These Tours Different

  • Built on the same cultural framework as our Japan Discovery sessions — not a generic guide script
  • Personalized to your specific curiosity, not a fixed group itinerary
  • Led by guides trained in the GARP cross-cultural framework, not just local trivia
  • Designed to deepen — not repeat — what you learned in your hotel session

Read the Air for Travelers

60 min · Live session
For individuals traveling to Japan & East Asia
Book a Session

A live, interactive 60-minute session for anyone traveling to — or doing business with — Japan and East Asia. Small groups of up to 8 participants engage directly with a GARP-certified facilitator to explore what "reading the air" actually means and how to apply it in real situations.

Unlike cultural orientation materials that deliver information, this session teaches a framework — a way of seeing that continues to work in situations the session didn't cover.

Topics Covered

  • What 空気を読む (kuuki wo yomu) means — and why it matters beyond Japan
  • High-context vs. low-context communication: the practical difference
  • Silence, indirect refusal, and the social weight of timing
  • Hierarchy in everyday interactions: business cards, seating, introductions
  • Reading group dynamics in meetings and social settings
  • Your own cultural blind spots — and how to work around them

What Makes It Different

  • Small group: max 8 participants per session for real dialogue
  • Live Q&A: bring your own specific situations and questions
  • Facilitator-led: not a video — a conversation with a practitioner
  • Framework-based: tools you can apply beyond the session
